The Tappan Zee Bridge Project
Speaker: Thomas McGuinness, P.E.
The New NY Bridge project is the largest transportation design-build project to date in the United States and the largest single construction contract in New York State history. This $3.98B twin-span crossing will replace the aging Tappan Zee Bridge, which carries the NYS Thruway (I-87/I-287) across the Hudson River and serves as a critical transportation link between Westchester and Rockland Counties. The project has achieved many notable accomplishments, most recently with opening of its westbound span on August 26th.
This presentation will provide a project overview and cover design and construction activities completed to date. It will focus on the engineering solutions implemented to overcome the risks and challenges associated with working over the 3-mile wide Hudson River such as, design constraints, accelerated construction methods and environmental protection commitments
